First, just a quick housekeeping note. My Facebook profile is being converted to an open page today, and if the crick don’t rise it should be relatively seamless. I love Facebook, and it’s my default home on the net to interact with readers – so personal – so I want to make it as easy as possible to interact there. The switch should allow readers to chat with me without having to ask or be “friended” first. Open is better, more is more … all that. So apologies if things go temporarily wonky, and eventually I’ll have a prettied up landing page there too, but as with everything, it’s a work-in-progress.

So remember my belabored post yesterday about plotting and outlining and notecards and being loose … blah, blah, blah? Well, let me first say that I meant every bit of it. Especially the ‘being flexible’ point. After a long day of reorganizing my brain (and missing my workout – ug! I’m still kicking myself for that) my nemesis – a.k.a. Significant Other – came home from work to find my desk covered in notecards, my hair standing up at the root, and a dazed look to my gaze.

“Stop it.”

“What?”

“Stop this. No notecards, no outline. Write the book.”

I gestured to the desk. “But I’m not done. I need -”

“You need to write the book. This is not writing. You’re scared because you’ve never written this before, but you need to remember what excited you about this idea – this character, this antagonist, this situation – and start with the first scene. Then write the next. Pour yourself onto the page. Keep it simple. Write the book.”

I looked at my notecards. My security blanket. “But I’ve never written a book that way before.”

“You wrote Scent that way before.”

Oh, shit.

“But instead of following your energy, you’re pouring it into the outline. You’re sucking the life out of it. You need to write the book.”

I looked at him.

He smiled.

I looked at him some more.

“You couldn’t fucking tell me this at the beginning of the day?”

So Monday. I start writing the book.

“You couldn’t fucking tell me this at the beginning of the day?” (ROTFLMAO!!!) OMG – you just cracked up half of the writing workshop (happy sigh).

I love snarky authors who blog. Seriously… BTW, the cartoons in my head and I are in love with your work and absolutely adore you. ;-)

We (my band) are mastering two new jazz tracks for you. We’ll be in the studio doing late night again because I’m playing with another musical idea. Started your portrait last night (it’s what I do – LOL) and we are going to cook up a fun blog post for you when the tracks are finalized.

Before I get backto lurking on-line, we FB challenged fans would appreciate a link to your new page.I keep trying to find it but I’m wading through what everyone else is bragging on you for (which is kind of cool actually, but all I want in the end is simply you).

Enjoy your day Vicki and may your writing go well. :-)

Jazz, art, writing – you do it all! :-) May it all go well for you too!

        Thank you. :-)

Yay! I was beginning to wonder who this notecard-writing author was and what she did with Vicki… (Thank you, SO!) I’ve also been meaning to ask, since everything and the kitchen sink went into SCENT, what will be going into Celestial Blues?

    • http://www.vickipettersson.com Vicki Pettersson

I’ve streamlined a bit. I learned through Zodiac that the reader doesn’t need the full monty in the first book. So the kitchen sink is in my brain, less so on the page. Elements, thought? Rockabilly, noir, detective fiction, angels, murder, love.
      See? Streamlined. ;-)

Bless your Significant Other. He’s dead on the money. Write the Damn Book. :-)

      *sigh*

  • Susan Adrian

    HA!
I just did this, for the first time since Jenna. Sat down and WROTE THE DAMN BOOK, just for me, just the way I wanted, no plotting or worrying or adjusting for audience or ideal structure.  I wrote the first draft in 6 weeks (have NEVER come close to that!) and am almost done with 2nd draft. It’s not perfect–what is?–but I am STILL enjoying every day’s work, and I can’t say that about the last 2 books.

Every book is different, and you do what works for you.

I do remember somebody saying something about a toolbox, once upon a Surrey…and having all the tools at your disposal, but choosing whichever ones seemed right at the time…

    • http://www.vickipettersson.com Vicki Pettersson

Yes, the energy is on the page where it counts rather than in the outline. Still – all tools have their uses. It’s just a matter of being flexible to put one down and pick another up as needed.
I’m so happy to hear about your WIP – keep me updated!

Occasionally the SO is correct. You own the words, they do not own you. So, in true form, say “F*#$ it!” and jump in feet first, girl. Happy writing this week :)

      Thanks, Mandi!
