Dark Fantasy Authors
Kim Harrison
I was walking through the bookstore, minding my own, when her first book,
DEAD WITCH WALKING, brought me to a jarring halt. Auto-buy, auto-buy,
auto-buy! Not only did she hook me from the first page, but after reading
about her kick-ass heroine, her fully-realized paranormal world, an her
entirely unique urban setting, I finally figured out what it was I had
written – dark urban fantasy! – and that there was a place
for it in the market. Check out her yahoo group so you can stay in touch
with the fascinating world of the Hollows.
Diana Gabaldon
Research and Craft Section Leader at CompuServe’s Books and Writers Forum,
though certainly better known as the author of the outstanding OUTLANDER
series. Unfailingly generous, astoundingly talented, Diana is my unofficial
mentor (meaning I unabashedly eavesdropped on practically every conversation
she’s had about writing in that forum, and soaked it all in like a good
little sea sponge). She’s also one of the authors I’ve privately dubbed
‘The Untouchables’ because she really is that good.
Kelley Armstrong
One of my auto-buys since first picking up one of the Women of the Otherworld
books. She also has a great message board, where both published and non-published
authors interact, mingle, and generally loose chaos on the publishing world in
the form of supernatural fiction.
Melissa Marr
Upper Young Adult Urban Fantasy Writer, whose star rose swiftly as she captured
the number two spot on the NY Times list her first time out of the gate. Talented
and smart, Melissa’s work is for young readers and old … and she’s thankfully
beginning to write adult urban fantasy, starting with an anthology out in May ’09.
Jeaniene Frost
Urban Fantasy Romance gets a shot in the arm with Jeaniene's new Night Huntress
series. I was wearying of vamps before picking this up but Jeaniene showed me the
error of my ways, and that there's always room for more great books. She was an
instant NY Times Bestseller as well.
Rachel Vincent
Okay, so we share an agent, and we’re writing in the same genre. More importantly,
we embarked on the journey to published author hood at approximately the same time,
and have bonded over many a ‘What on hell am I doing?’ moments. Her first book is
STRAY, soon to be followed by ROGUE.
Jocelynn Drake
Joce’s book, NIGHTWALKER will be out in August ’08, and it’s blessedly refreshing
take on the vampire genre had me practically begging to cover quote it. A much-welcomed
member to the dark fantasy community.
Charlaine Harris
Not only do I love her Sookie series, but she can seriously pen some mysteries, one
of which had me sobbing. She is one of the hardest working authors out there, an
awesome talent, and kind to boot. In spite of all that, I rather like trying to
make her curse at me in a sweet southern drawl.
Keri Arthur
Talented author of the Riley Jensen Urban Fantasy series. We met at a conference in
’07. She beaned me on the head with a peanut. (I think she’s jealous because our
agent likes me better. These things happen. {eg})
Faith Hunter
A dark fantasy author with an awesome post-apocalyptic fantasy series. Her world
building is outstanding and original.
Eldon Thompson
Granted, Eldon doesn't write dark fantasy. It's big, fat steal-your-breath, sweep-you-away
high fantasy, but with plenty of dark twists to keep even my most twisted readers happy.
Looking to get lost in a book? Pick up the first in his trilogy, THE CRIMSON SWORD.

The cover artist for all three of my series books. I can spot a McGrath cover a mile
away; they’re distinctive, dark and stunning.

published.
Fangs, Fur & Fey Blog
The brainchild of Melissa Marr, FF&F has become the place for readers and writers of
Urban Fantasy to talk about the writing biz. If you're interested in these authors or

Surrey International Writers'
Conference
This conference has been called the best writers' conference in North America, and it's
hard to disagree. The caliber of presenters is unbelievable, and it's both a professional
and intimate environment. Writers of all levels and genres have no trouble finding
something useful to take home from this con.
